Based upon 2000-year-old Chinese medicine, acupuncture is increasingly used in the West. There is clear evidence that it can be very beneficial, encouraging a healing response and providing relief from pain. Fine, sterile needles are inserted into the skin at specific points. Although this may sound scary, most people don’t feel the needles or may simply experience a tingling sensation. Because acupuncture can have significant effects, practitioners need to consider pre-existing conditions so we'll take a full medical history before commencing any treatment. It’s also advisable to have a light meal before a session.
Uses of acupuncture
Acupuncture works by stimulating the production of pain and stress-relieving hormones, by increasing blood flow and by blocking the pain signals from nerve fibres. Sometimes a single treatment provides relief, but a short course of treatment sessions may be necessary. Acupuncture can be used to treat a range of conditions including joint pain, back pain and chronic headaches and is frequently used in pain management. It can also be very effective when combined with other forms of treatment.
